AN UNKNOWN CINEMA OF SERGEY PARADJANOV

In Russian with English subtitles (made in 2002)
1993

Sergey Paradjanov (1924-1990) is one of the 20th century’s greatest masters of cinema, one of the most visionary film directors of the world. A new cinematic language was introduced by Paradjanov in 1966 during the making of the film “Kiev Frescos.” Only preliminary shots were made. The movie was banned and the author was accused of “a surrealistic, chimeric and mystically subjective attitude towards the events of World War

II.” Only one copy of this work still exists; it was saved by Alexander Antipenko, Paradjanov’s cinematographer at the time. Our studio was lucky to be able to present it to a wide audience.

Also, this documentary features the exhibition displaying Paradjanov’s exquisite visual artwork publicly for the first time, two and a half years after his demise. The director, Sergey Paradjanov, appears not only as a recognized filmmaker but is introduced as a visual artist – the artist helps us better understand the director.
