BIRTH OF A HERO

In Russian with English subtitles
1992

The first documentary ever made on now world famous “Sots”- artist Grisha Bruskin, “champion” of the first Sotheby's auction in Russia (1988),
where his works were sold for nearly $1,000,000.

“Birth of a Hero” is the title of Grisha Bruskin’s performance that he arranged semi-legally in the Kashirka showroom in Moscow in the early days of Perestroika and Glasnost in the USSR. The images, for the first time shown in public within this performance, eventually developed into a large sculptural installation (much later and not in Russia). Soviet mythology is the primary subject of Bruskin’s entire artistic practice. He himself stars in the myth of a Soviet Cinderella.

Shown at the National Centre for Contemporary Arts, Moscow; Art Frankfurt, 2002; Art Film Festival in New York, 2018; 50th Annual ASEEES convention, Boston, MA, 2018; etc.
